The Year of Magical Wanking

AS PART OF cork midsummer festival,
absolut fringe dublin, outbusrt belfast 2011
& staged as a work in progress during QUEER NOTIONS 2010

Written and performed by the incredible Neil Watkins, The Year of Magical Wanking electrified audiences for one and a half performances last December. There was a power cut during one performance. The whole of Temple Bar went dark, hence we never made it to two performances. You can catch this beautifully crafted confessional on tour in 2011.

What the flyer said...

Neil Watkins has wanked more than is healthy, allegedly.

As one of Ireland’s most exciting artists and incendiary performers, Neil is a force of nature, a maverick, a 33-year old homosexual with a Jesus complex. On orders from Heaven, this is Neil’s story through the wilderness of queerness—from Catholic Ireland to the cruising bars of the world, from suburban ‘Head Shops’ to Native American ceremonies.

Named as Queer Notions 2010 festival highlight by The Irish Times, The Year of Magical Wanking is a brave and heartbreaking exploration of porn addiction, destructive sexual behaviour, Catholic guilt and family heartbreak. Written in hypnoticverse, it is both a profound personal journey and a furious state of the nation address.

Supported by Cork Midsummer Festival.

THISISPOPBABY is part of PROJECT CATALYST an initiative of Project Arts Centre.

What the papers said...

"...Add the sourness of Watkins' bitterness towards the teachings of Catholicism (its censures more than its spiritual beliefs) and you have something both caustic and considered, a seething personal autobiography which, under Phillip McMahon’s bracingly unsentimental direction, is transformed into a more capacious metaphor for disaffection and regeneration, well poised in its aesthetics and politics within THISISPOPBABY’s Queer Notions festival." Peter Crawley, Irish Theatre Magazine. READ THE REST

“ Truthful, heartfelt and immediately identifiable…astonishingly brave” The Irish Times. READ THE REST

"...comedy triumphantly cajoled and teased from between the jaws of a terrible truth." - READ THE REST

"...nothing short of Shakespearean...This play needed to be staged." READ THE REST

What we say...

Neil Watkins is one of the coutry's most electric performers, and in the last two years TIPB & Watkins have been on an amazing journey together. From playing to 1300 people at Electric Picnic to energising the basement of the Abbey Theatre, to slaying Queer Notions 2010. We are proud to be continuing our journey with Neil in 2011.
