First presented as part of the 2007 Dublin Fringe Festival, Will St. Leger's Art Raid was a rare gem that thrilled critics and participants in Dublin, provoking them to leave their morals at the door and steal from an artist.
With an invitation to take his brand of guerrilla theatre to The Arches in Glasgow, Will teamed up with THISISPOPBABY for his UK debut. Art Raid had two showings in Glasgow, on April 15th & 16th 2008 and two showings at Kinsale Arts Week, Cork on July 15th & 16th 2008.
Art Raid - For people who love art but hate paying for it!
Art Raid is a rare visual happening, an exhibition where the audience is invited to steal the art on display. Taking a stab at your moral compass, Irish stencil artivist Will St Ledger presents a rogue show of contemporary street art in an unconventional setting. Paranoia sets in as you enter a world of security guards, surveillance cameras and agent provocateurs. Rumours abound that there will be a free-for-all of the art during the night. Tension mounts as everyone waits for something to happen. The alarm sounds… what will you do? Grab and run?
"It offers an unforgettable glimpse of the dark underbelly of the human psyche."
-The Scotsman
Jenny: There is something immensely satisfying about watching audience participants in this show. To say people get into the spirit of things is an understatement. Plenty of intellectual fodder for the pub afterwards...once your heartbeat has slowed down. And you get a piece of stencil art to hang in your living room afterwards - what's not to love?
Phillip: Aside from us having a blast with Will in Glasgow, this was the trip where Jenny accosted a group of middle aged Irish football fans in MacDonald's, stuck on a cockney accent and proceeded to prod them about being Irish. To say they were deflated would be an understatement. I think she wrote it off as a social experiment!
